Slate Tile or Travertine?
Both slate and travertine tile are natural stone materials which will add substantial beauty to your floors and value to your home. However, slate tile will work better in some situations and travertine in others. Here is how to make the decision if you are not sure what to choose.
1. Base Your Decision on Color
Slate tiles are generally gray in color although they can incorporate various other shades. You might get gray tiles with a blue, green or yellow tinge depending on the natural color of the stone. Even so slate generally looks much better in a color scheme based on white, gray, blue, green or black – the cooler end of the color spectrum. Travertine tile is generally in a much warmer shade and will suit warm neutral color schemes better than slate. So if your room is decorated in tones of cream, beige and brown, travertine is the way to go. With either choice, you will be able to find a grout color that will compliment travertine or slate.
2. Base Your Decision on Style
Slate tile tends to look a little bit utilitarian when compared to travertine flooring. It is a more workaday color and material even though it may be the absolute right one for your home and therefore look a million dollars. Travertine has the look of marble about it which has been used in grand homes and palaces for thousands of years going back to the time of the Greek and Roman Empires, so if you want your home to look palatial rather than country farmhouse it may be a better choice for you.
3. Base Your Decision on Price
Slate flooring, as a rule, is slightly cheaper than travertine as it is found in more places and therefore quarries are more common. Generally it is produced locally and not imported. Although travertine is quarried in a number of countries, it is quite often imported and therefore more costs are involved for transportation.
