Introducing Solid Foods to Your Baby

Four to six months is generally a safe and logical age to start the introduction of solid foods and liquids besides milk. The old wives’ tale of beginning cereal feeding before this age needs to be dispelled. It will not keep your baby sleeping longer or waiting longer between feedings. Baby will let you know when he is ready; there are subtle clues in many transitions, and there is no need to rush them. Doctors will not suggest this as it has proven ineffective, and can be dangerous as well – swallowing and gumming reflexes are not geared to handling solid foods. Rushing this step can lead to upset tummies and other problems.
