How to Ship a Hard Drive

We are all accustomed to sending data files through email, but what do you do with huge files like raw photos or videos?

The easy and most common answer is to create an ftp folder that can be accessed by the person receiving the files where they can go pick them up and download them to their computers. This works fine in some cases, but what happens when the files are even bigger than an ftp site can handle because of the upload and download times?

The next best option is to ship an entire hard drive with the files on it. With next day shipping the transfer of files can still occur pretty quickly and will suffice for the needs of most people. Film editors use this method quite often but because of the fragility of the hard drives, you need to be careful.

I have seen hard drives shipped only using padded envelopes become damaged in transit, and this not only results in them being unusable, but can add days to the completion of a project.

So next time you need to ship a hard drive loaded with video files, use a padded envelope and then place that inside of a standard UPS or FedEx shipping box.
