Considerations for Collars
Everyone putting a collar on a dog should hear Guinness’ the Flat Coat Retriever’s true story. Guinness was wearing a chain training collar because his playmate kept chewing the leather ones off of him. One afternoon while they were wrestling, Guinness’ German Sheppard playmate somehow managed to wrap his leg in the chain, chocking Guinness and when the GSD panicked, he bolted to a nearby pond. Fortunately Guinness’ owner was nearby and went into the water to get both dogs out. Guinness was blue, out cold, and his owner then panicked. Reaching for the nearest implement to separate the two dogs (the GSD is still fighting madly to get free) the owner accidently slits Guinness’ throat in five, inch long pieces. Guinness did regain consciousness and his throat is now healing up fine. He suffered no permanent damage, but I will never forget how close he came to not coming back from the other side that day. I implore all dog owners to remember Guinness and use leather collars on their dogs, and remember nylon is just as difficult to break as chain is.
