Basic Care And Maintenance Of Riding Lawn Mowers
Many people who buy riding lawn mowers have no idea how to take care of it. This is a real shame because in reality, there are only a few basic things that you need to do to keep it running in tip-top shape.
The most important thing of all is to keep the proper amount of oil in the engine at all times and change it on a regular basis. At least once a month you should check the oil level and add some fresh oil if it is needed. Just pull out the dipstick, clean it off, put it back in, pull it out again and read the oil level. If it’s below “full” add some in until it is full. The oil should also be changed at least once each season (along with the oil filter, if there is one). Each time you change the oil you should probably change the spark plug too.
The second most important thing is to make sure the air filter isn’t too dirty. If it is really clogged up, replace it with a new one. If it’s only partially clogged you might be able to blow it out with an air compressor and get some more use out of it. A blocked air filter will make the engine run hot and can cause engine failure, so be sure to check the air filter once or twice every season.
Other than those two things, there are only a few things to keep an eye on. If you notice that some blades of grass aren’t cut to the same height as the rest you probably need new blades. You may need to put air in your tires to keep them all at the same level. If the spinning blades are shaking or making a loud noise, you may need to adjust the belts that run the blades.
Just doing these few routine maintenance tasks will help your lawn mower last for years and will make cutting the lawn an easy and enjoyable experience!
