APW Fire Extinguisher Tips

There are several fire extinguisher types on the market, but we are only going to take a look at one type in this article. The extinguisher type we will be looking at is the APW or “Air Pressurized Water” type. This type of fire extinguisher uses water that is under pressure within a stainless steel canister.  If you are like most of us and have been in a public school you will surely notice these type of extinguisher. Like I mentioned they are stainless steel or silver and stand about 24 inches tall. When completely full of water they weight anywhere from 20 to 25 pounds.

So when is it best to use an Air Pressurized Water fire extinguisher? It is recommended that they be used for only Class A fires. Class A fires are typically wood, paper, or cloth type fires. While very good for Class A fires APW extinguishers should not be use for flammable liquid fires. If you use water to try and extinguish a flammable liquid fire you run the risk of spreading the fire and making things worse. The same goes for using an APW fire extinguisher for an electrical fire. Water is a very good conductor of electricity and you can electrocute yourself.

Be careful when attempting to put out any fires and if possible call the local fire department as they are better equipped to fight fires.
