A Palm Nailer Is a Useful Nailing Tool
Nailing has never been easier thanks to the various types of nail guns to make the job easier. Nail guns fire bulk nails through a trigger action and make short work of just about any nailing job. The times when the nail gun will be unable to reach a tight or difficult position will require the use of a palm nailer instead.
A palm nailer is a type of nail gun with a couple of essential differences. First of all, the nails are not fired in by means of a trigger system so you don’t have the explosive force involved with firing a nail. Secondly, a palm nailer secures a single nail at a time so it is much slower to operate than the quick fire action of a nail gun.
Palm nailers are pneumatically operated by means of compressed air. The nailer is placed over the head of the nail and when pressure is applied to the nail the hammer plate activates striking the nail into place at a very fast rate. You wouldn’t usually use a palm nailer in place of a regular nail gun because it would be simply too labor intensive, but it would perform your nailing task quicker than if you used a hammer. Palm nailers should be capable of handling any bulk sized nails that are used in standard nail guns and the tightest spaces can be reached by the smaller palm nailers such as the Bostitch PN50 Mini Impact Nailer.
These small nailing tools are not very expensive at less than $70. They should be considered a backup option that will remain in your toolbox for the majority of the time and will only be brought out when a difficult nailing situation arises. It is not likely that you buy a palm nailer right away. However, it will be required for performing any heavy duty nailing but after each use you will be pleased that you made the decision to buy one.
